I have always loved Math, it has been sort of like a passion of mine since childhood and when i was presented the opportunity of organizing the PI day event I didnt step back. The entire purpose of this event was to celebrate math as a whole, celebrate the birth of such integral concepts such as Pi and much more. Furthermore, it was also the birthday of the legendary scientist Albert Einstien on the Pi day. This was the first time i had ever organized an event such as this, and doing something like this brought out a lot of qualities out of me which I didn’t know I possessed so strongly, such as Leadership, decision making, Confidence, Co-operation, open-mindedness, people skills and much more. This event led me to demonstrate my abilities and qualities to the full extent. To talk about the event a bit more, this whole event was like an exhibition or a carnival of sorts, with math and physics stalls; each of which teaching something essential to all the visitors, teaching through fun games or quizzes and much more. There were about 11 stalls of math, 5 stalls of physics and 2 food stalls in the event. I did this event with a core team of more of my peers who help me with many parts of the same.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
- I Identified my strengths while working on the project. I saw that I was able to make everyone cooperate with each other and everything was working very smoothly. Furthermore, I saw that I could lead everyone efficiently; seeing how everyone were working with me and completing all the tasks I assigned to them. My organising skills and management skills lead to productive output in short amounts of time that we had for the project, leading to overall efficiency. More strengths that I idnetified were creativity, due to all the creative ideas I was pitching and implementing. I had never done something like this and all these qualities and strengths of mine just came out; I honestly felt surprised as I had never actually applied these qualities of mine and about the organisation as a strength, I never knew I had a strength such as that. However, an area of improvement for me could be that I would often micromanage everyone and look at each and every aspect of the project, this would end up taking a bit more time from my end and was not harming anything, but its just something for me to improve upon. I feel that the time could have been used even more productively if I had worked upon that. Its important to asses your strengths and weaknesses in order to really know where you stand and what all things you need to improve upon. I feel that we should be constantly improving upon our skills in order to be the best version of ourselves.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
- A challenge while organising the project was that majority of the members had low motivation to work, due to which work efficiency was decreasing in the starting few days and time was running out. Another challenge was limited time, we had very little time and a lot of work to do when I overtook this project. Bringing out creative ideas and actually executing them with such low amount of time was not easy. I worked against both these challenges by pairing up the team members with their friends and assigning them work, which led to better and faster results then previous times. I motivated the team members by also giving them incentives here and there in order for them to work. After I increased the work efficiency, time management was no longer a big issue. Everyone worked in full force and completed everything by the deadline. I have never overtaken challenge such as these before, and for something that I have faced for the first time, I feel really good about how I worked around these challenges. Moreover, I also sharpened many of my skills in the proccess. My leadership skills, communication skills and critical thinking skills improved while working against these challenges and these challenges only ended up benefiting me in terms of my own personal development.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
- Pi Day was an event of great magnitude. It took a lot of planning. Firstly, I had to work on the initial idea myself, thinking about all the things that could be done for celebrating the day. Next was getting the idea approved by our teachers. After this I had to form a team because everything could not be done alone. For the team I pitched the idea to my friends and school mates and got myself many people who would work at specific positions and would help me out with everything. It was like a core team and it involved of an “event-incharge, Resources head, Decor head, Food stalls head and a Math and physics stalls head.” This core team and I planned and came up with all the things we were going to have in the event. We decided upon 10 math stalls which would each have one or the other math concepts being showcased through fun games or activities, similarly we also had 4 physics stalls and then 2 food stalls which would have food in the style of math. We had to plan everything, from the layout of the whole event, to what each and every stall were doing to the decoration of the event. The planning of the event took long hours and once we figured everything out, it was all about the execution of the planning. Initiating the execution and preparation of the event wasnt that hard, because we had planned everything beforehand, we just followed all things that we had to do. I think planning was harder than initiating since planning the experiences took a lot of time and brainpower, moreover it got very confusing at times as well, because we had so many options of all the things we could have kept at the event, the timing of the event, which grades to invite in the event and much more.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
- This project required a lot of effort from my end and it took a lot of my ttime as well. There were many times when in the early ins it was just me and 2 other people working on everything and it also happened that one of my core team members fell sick and couldnt come to most of the preparation slots, meaning a higher workload upon me. I attended every meeting and every session and many times even though I was the event incharge, I took part in helping out in all areas, whether it was decorations or working with the stalls. This whole project required a lot of effort and commitment from me since it was a big project. We came early ins multiple times in a week for many weeks also.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
- Working collaboratively with others is generally very easy for me. Working with everyone led to good, efficient and valuable output of work which led to a successful project. Moreover, working with my core team also helped me form better ideas and planning. Having a team just made everything easier. My leadership was very important for the project in order to have a smooth event and the preparation as well and in order to keep everything running smoothly and organised.
To conclude, I developed the learner profile attributes of, “Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Balanced, and Reflective.” This project was also deeply connected to one of my subjects that I have chosen, Mathematics. This project led to a celebration of math, and it made math more enjoyable to young minds, probably making math more interesting for them. The highligh of this experience to me would just be all those days and countless hours spent in the preparation of the whole event. I think that this event was a success and it made me feel really good and proud of myself that I was able to organise and lead a team to generate an output of this extent.
