CAS Experience: Hula Hoop Race Activity Leader

This CAS experience involved organizing and helping others participate in a hula hoop race. My role was not just to participate, but also to guide others, explain the rules, demonstrate how to play, and keep the energy of the group high. It was a fun and interactive experience, but also came with several challenges like managing the group, ensuring fair play, and encouraging everyone to be involved. It gave me an opportunity to build leadership skills, develop patience, and work collaboratively with my peers in a creative and active environment.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One of the main challenges I faced was managing the group efficiently while making sure everyone was engaged and enjoying the activity. Some participants were shy or unsure about how to use the hula hoop, and others were overly enthusiastic and needed to be guided to follow the rules. Balancing both groups required clear communication, empathy, and adaptability.

I also realized that demonstrating the activity confidently was key to encouraging others. I had to work on my own technique with the hula hoop and practice beforehand so I could demonstrate it well. Through this process, I developed better communication, leadership, and coordination skills, along with more confidence in managing a group activity.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Even though I was leading the activity, the success of the event came from everyone working together. I collaborated with my peers to set up the race, organize participants, and maintain a cheerful and supportive atmosphere. When someone struggled with the hula hoop, others cheered them on or offered tips, which made the experience more encouraging and inclusive.

This collective spirit made me realize how teamwork enhances even the simplest games. It was not about competition but about creating a space where everyone felt included and enjoyed themselves. Through this, I saw how collaboration can boost morale and participation, especially in group-based physical activities.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance

While guiding this activity, I began to reflect on the importance of access to physical play and movement in promoting health and well-being. Not all communities around the world have access to safe recreational spaces or the resources to organize group activities. The hula hoop race, which used very basic and inexpensive equipment, reminded me how low-cost activities can still bring immense joy and health benefits.

This made me think about the importance of making such inclusive and eco-friendly games more available globally. Encouraging physical activity using simple tools can support both personal health and community bonding—something that is globally significant in today’s screen-heavy, sedentary world.

Final Reflection

This experience was more than just organizing a fun game—it was a learning journey in leadership, communication, and inclusion. It helped me grow more comfortable in leading a group, responding to unexpected situations, and promoting an active and positive group dynamic. I also became more aware of how even simple recreational activities can reflect larger global issues like health equity and sustainability. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead and learn through play, and I hope to continue creating spaces where fun and learning go hand-in-hand.
