Creativity – Pi Day 2025

As part of my CAS experience, I volunteered for Pi Day which is a school-wide event celebrating Math and Physics. I was part of the decor team, where I helped design and set up thematic displays to make the space visually engaging and aligned with the subject. This experience allowed me to apply creative thinking in a structured setting, work collaboratively with peers, and improve my planning and organizational skills in a real event context.

Before the event, we met as a team to brainstorm ideas for how to visually represent mathematical and scientific concepts in a way that was fun but still educational. We discussed color schemes, key themes, and how we could use the available space effectively. Time management and coordination were especially important since we had to prepare everything in a short time window while balancing academic responsibilities. On the day before and the morning of the event, our team came together to put everything in place. I helped with setting up banners, arranging cut-outs, and ensuring that everything was consistent with our plan. We faced a few unexpected challenges, such as delayed materials and having to redo parts of the setup due to size miscalculations. Despite that, we adapted quickly and supported each other to stay on track. The final setup included Pi symbols, mathematical puzzles, physics-themed elements, and color-coded sections that created an engaging and cohesive atmosphere. Through this experience, I developed both creative and practical skills. I also became more confident in handling last-minute issues and making quick decisions under pressure. One of the most rewarding parts was seeing students and teachers interact with the decor, take pictures, and show genuine interest in the event. It reminded me that creativity isn’t limited to the arts—it can also enhance how academic subjects are experienced and understood.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Through my involvement in the Pi Day decor team, I got a better understanding of both what I’m good at and what I still need to work on. One of my strengths was definitely visual planning, I could easily picture how the elements would fit together in the space and how to make everything look cohesive. I also worked well in a team, especially when it came to staying organized and splitting up tasks efficiently under pressure.

That said, this experience also highlighted a few areas I need to improve. I realized I tend to underestimate how long certain things will take, which caused a bit of a time crunch near the end. I also learned that I need to get better at adjusting when things don’t go according to plan, like when materials showed up late or measurements didn’t work out the first time.

Overall, Pi Day helped me build on my strengths while showing me where I still have room to grow, mainly in managing time better, being more flexible, and staying calm when last-minute problems come up.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

While working on the Pi Day decor team, I encountered a few unexpected challenges that pushed me out of my comfort zone. One of the biggest was turning our creative ideas into something practical within the limited space and time we had. Some concepts looked great in our initial sketches but didn’t translate as well during the actual setup.

We had to think on our feet—adjusting placements, reworking proportions, and finding creative ways to tie everything together without starting from scratch. It taught me how to stay flexible, problem-solve in the moment, and keep things moving even when plans had to change.

This experience helped me develop a more adaptable mindset as well as better problem solving skills and gave me more confidence in handling situations where things don’t go exactly as planned.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.

Balancing Pi Day prep with academic deadlines, especially with final exams coming up within a month, wasn’t the easiest, but I made it a point to stay consistent and follow through on what I had committed to. Our decor team had to handle everything from brainstorming to execution, and it required steady effort over several days, not just a one-time contribution.

Even with other responsibilities, I made time to attend meetings, share ideas, and help with the setup. There were moments when we had to redo parts of the decor or make last-minute changes, but I stayed involved instead of backing out or leaving it to someone else.

This experience reminded me that commitment means showing up fully, even when it’s inconvenient. It showed me the value of persistence, and how small, consistent efforts can lead to something impactful—especially when working as part of a team.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

Working on the Pi Day decor team really showed me how valuable collaboration is when it comes to getting things done efficiently. With so many tasks happening at once, designing, cutting, assembling, and setting up, we had to communicate constantly and divide responsibilities so nothing became overwhelming or disorganized.

Everyone brought something different to the table, whether it was design ideas, execution skills, or just being quick with problem-solving. I learned how to balance taking initiative with stepping back and trusting others with their parts. We had to make quick decisions together, give and receive feedback, and adjust our plans based on what was actually working.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was how much smoother and more enjoyable the process became when we worked as a team. Even when we faced challenges, we figured them out together. It made the experience not just more efficient, but also more fun and fulfilling.

Overall, being part of the Pi Day decor team was a meaningful and enriching experience. It pushed me to think creatively, work collaboratively, and stay adaptable under pressure. I developed practical skills in planning and execution, and also learned how to navigate real-time problem-solving as part of a team. More importantly, it showed me how creativity can be used to make academic subjects more engaging and accessible. This experience not only allowed me to contribute to the school community but also helped me grow as a more balanced, reflective, and capable learner.
