My CAS Journey with IIT Madras’ Online AI & Data Science Programme

In a world increasingly driven by data and machine intelligence, I had the unique opportunity to participate in an online program offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science. This experience became a part of my CAS journey, aligning with the Creativity and Activity strands. Over several weeks, I not only explored the cutting edge of technology but also grew in self-awareness, perseverance, and planning — in line with Learning Outcomes 1, 2, and 3.

Creativity and Innovation in Action

The programme challenged me to think creatively as I engaged with complex concepts like machine learning algorithms, neural networks, and data visualization. Designing mini-projects using Python and exploring how AI can solve real-world problems pushed me beyond the boundaries of classroom learning. I learned to take initiative in designing solutions and collaborating with peers in virtual breakout rooms.

  • LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
At the beginning, I realized I had a strong inclination toward logical problem-solving but lacked confidence in coding and statistical analysis. Through hands-on modules and mentorship sessions, I identified these areas and gradually built my competence. I became more comfortable using tools like Jupyter Notebook and working with datasets — a major personal growth.

Activity Through Mental and Cognitive Engagement

While the program was not physically strenuous, it demanded immense mental focus, self-discipline, and consistent effort — all key elements of the Activity strand in CAS. I structured a weekly schedule, dedicating 8–10 hours for lectures, coding practice, and quizzes. This routine helped me build mental stamina and resilience.

  • LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:
One of the biggest challenges was completing a capstone mini-project where I had to train a basic machine learning model to predict housing prices. Initially overwhelmed, I broke the task into smaller goals, sought feedback from mentors, and learned new data-cleaning techniques. It taught me the value of learning from failure and iterative improvement.

Planning and Progression

Completing the IIT Madras program required long-term planning. I had to balance it with schoolwork, CAS activities, and other responsibilities. I set weekly targets and tracked my progress using Notion, adjusting when necessary to stay on track.

  • LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
I registered for the course independently, researched its curriculum, and mapped it to the CAS learning outcomes. I created a personalized timeline with milestones, ensuring I met both academic and CAS goals. This proactive approach helped me stay accountable and motivated throughout the course.
