CAS Blog – Learning Basketball Through HDP PS

Taking HDP PS was a great opportunity for me to learn basketball from scratch. Before this, I had never played basketball seriously, but over the course of Grade 11, I learned the basics and intermediate skills that helped me improve significantly. This training did not just make me a better player, but it also helped me develop discipline, consistency, and perseverance, which reflected in other areas of my life, such as studying and working out. By the end of the year, I had even competed in a basketball tournament, where my team came in second place. Learning from both professional-level players and my school coaches expanded my knowledge of the game and gave me new perspectives on how to improve.

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

When I first started basketball, I struggled with basic skills like dribbling, shooting, and positioning. However, through regular practice and guidance, I started noticing my strengths and weaknesses. I realized that I had good stamina and defensive skills, but my shooting and ball control needed improvement. Recognizing this helped me focus on the right areas during training. Over time, my hard work paid off, and I saw improvements in both my shooting accuracy and court awareness. This experience showed me that self-reflection is crucial in learning and personal growth.

LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills

Learning a new sport was challenging because I had no prior experience. At first, it was frustrating to see others play so effortlessly while I struggled with basic moves. However, I stayed committed, practicing every chance I got. Slowly, I started learning dribbling techniques, layups, and shooting form, and my confidence grew. A major challenge was understanding game strategies, but by watching experienced players and learning from my mistakes, I improved. By the end of the year, I had developed new skills that not only helped me in basketball but also improved my discipline and perseverance in other areas of life.

LO3: Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

While I joined HDP PS as a structured program, I realized that improving in basketball required personal planning and initiative. I set a training routine, focusing on different skills each week, and I made sure to practice outside of sessions. I also took the initiative to watch professional matches, analyze gameplay, and ask experienced players for tips. Planning my own training schedule helped me progress faster, showing me the importance of organization and goal-setting in self-improvement.

LO4: Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experience

Improving in basketball took a lot of time and effort. There were days when I felt discouraged because I couldn’t get a move right or when my shots kept missing. But I didn’t give up. I kept practicing, took feedback from my coaches, and remained patient with my progress. This commitment not only helped me become a better player but also taught me that success in anything requires consistency and perseverance.

LO5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Basketball is a team sport, and I quickly learned that individual skills alone are not enough—teamwork is just as important. Playing in a team helped me understand different roles on the court, how to communicate effectively, and how to trust my teammates. In our tournament, we worked together to create strategies, support each other, and adapt to different challenges. This experience made me appreciate the value of teamwork and collaboration, which are essential skills in both sports and life.

LO6: Demonstrate Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Through basketball, I learned about the global impact of sports on health, teamwork, and personal development. Around the world, basketball is used as a tool to bring communities together, promote healthy lifestyles, and even support social change. Playing the sport made me realize how physical activity is essential for mental and physical well-being. This connected to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, reinforcing the importance of staying active and engaged in sports.

LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Fairness and sportsmanship were key lessons I learned while playing basketball. I always made sure to play by the rules, respect referees’ decisions, and support my teammates and opponents alike. Whether it was calling a foul on myself or accepting a tough loss, I understood that playing with integrity is more important than just winning. This experience helped me recognize that honesty, respect, and ethical behavior are crucial in both sports and everyday life.

Conclusion

Joining HDP PS and learning basketball was an eye-opening experience that taught me more than just how to play the sport. I gained discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for physical activity and ethical sportsmanship. The skills I developed in basketball have positively impacted other areas of my life, making me more focused, committed, and resilient.
