Global Odyssey – Creativity

The Global Odyssey Event is an annual student-led initiative that celebrates entrepreneurship, leadership, and creativity. With food, fashion, and fun stalls, students are responsible for managing everything—from marketing and sales to operations and customer interaction. As a Grade 11 student, I was a part of the Decor Team, where we worked together to bring the visual theme of the event to life. Our collective goal was to transform the campus into an engaging and immersive space that matched the energy of the event and created a memorable atmosphere for everyone.

LO1 – Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
Being a part of the Decor Team gave me the chance to explore and apply my creative strengths while also realizing where I needed to improve. I’ve always enjoyed visual design and bringing ideas to life, and this experience helped me realize that I work well in group brainstorming and execution phases. However, I also noticed I sometimes struggle with practical limitations—especially when certain ideas look amazing in theory but are hard to make happen within a given time or budget. I learned to adapt and find simpler ways to achieve similar results. I also had to improve how I communicated and contributed ideas within a group setting, especially when multiple opinions and suggestions were in play.

LO2 – Taking on Challenges and Developing New Skills
The event was large in scale, and our decor tasks had to be completed within a tight timeline. From planning wall setups to creating handmade elements and assembling everything on the day of the event, it was a fast-paced experience that taught me how to work under pressure. One of the biggest challenges we faced was turning a broad theme into physical designs that looked cohesive and exciting. As a volunteer, I had to learn how to interpret the vision of our team leads while also taking initiative to execute tasks efficiently. I picked up new techniques for creating DIY decorations and gained a better sense of spatial arrangement, color coordination, and team alignment. Working through these tasks helped me grow more confident in my ability to contribute meaningfully to a creative team.

LO5 – Working Collaboratively
The Global Odyssey event was truly a team effort. Being in the Decor Team meant that I had to work closely with others, listen to instructions, and also offer support to teammates when needed. It wasn’t always easy—everyone had different ideas and sometimes we disagreed on how things should look or where things should go. But we learned to communicate respectfully, share feedback, and help each other when someone was falling behind. We also had to coordinate with other teams—like social media, food, and fashion—to make sure our decorations complemented the rest of the event. Through this collaboration, I saw how much better things turn out when people are willing to listen, compromise, and support each other.

LO7 – Ethics of Choices and Actions
While helping with decor, we also considered our impact on the environment. Our team made efforts to use sustainable materials whenever possible—like reusing decorations from past events or choosing paper-based over plastic decor. We also had conversations about fair work distribution within the team to make sure no one was doing too much or too little. This experience reminded me that even small actions, like choosing eco-friendly materials or supporting a teammate who’s struggling, reflect personal ethics and responsibility in a group setting.

The Global Odyssey Event taught me a lot more than just how to decorate a space—it gave me insight into the power of teamwork, the value of thoughtful planning, and the importance of balancing creativity with execution. I developed my problem-solving, time management, and collaboration skills in an environment that was both fun and challenging. Being part of a shared vision and seeing the event come together from behind the scenes made me feel proud of the work we had done. If I get a chance to do this again, I’d love to take on more responsibility and bring even more creative ideas to life.
