Shilpa School for Special Children Spending time at Shilpa School for Special Children was one of the most touching and transformative experiences I have ever had. The few hours we spent there were filled with laughter, play, and genuine joy. From lively games of volleyball and dodgeball to creative moments of thumb painting, every activity was a window into the children’s vibrant spirits. One of the most heartwarming moments was when we handed out balloons to each child — the delight on their faces was unforgettable. Despite the short duration, the bonds we built with the children were deeply meaningful. Their pure-hearted excitement and unwavering warmth left a lasting impact on me. As we said our goodbyes, promising to return soon, I realized how deeply connected I had become to these children in such a short span. The entire experience was a powerful reminder of the value of empathy and the importance of inclusive engagement.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Before the visit, we worked together to thoughtfully plan the day’s schedule, keeping in mind the needs and preferences of the children. Organizing inclsive games and interactive activities required both creativity and sensitivity. Planning this event taught me the importance of preparation and how thoughtful organization can lead to a more meaningful experience for everyone involved.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
By volunteering at a school for children with special needs, I developed a deeper understanding of the importance of inclusion and accessibility. It highlighted how communities around the world must strive to create spaces where every individual, regardless of their abilities, is given the opportunity to thrive. This experience connected me to broader global discussions around equity in education and social participation.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I discovered a strength I had not fully recognized before — my ability to connect with children through warmth and playfulness. My patience and attentiveness helped build trust and make the children feel seen and valued. However, I also realized that I could strengthen my communication strategies, especially when working with children who communicate differently or require additional support.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively
The entire experience was made smoother through teamwork. We coordinated activities, supported one another when some kids needed extra attention, and shared responsibilities seamlessly. This collaboration made the environment more joyful and organised for the children, and reminded me how collective effort amplifies impact.
