Bal Mela was a very wholesome and vibrant experience for me, with students from different rural government school joining us for a day filled with fun activities specially picked to make the day all about them at Fountainhead school. My role in Bal Mela was to face-paint their faces and engage with them creatively. This experience turned out to be quite enriching as it demanded me to not only show my creative side but along with that it required me to portray communication skills which could help me deepen my adaptability while working with students from different schools with different backgrounds.
LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I recognized my strengths in creativity, communication, and working with children.Engaging with all of them was not very easy at first but while i could communicate well with some, other students having noticed that opened up too and i ensured they felt comfortable and excited about the activity.
However, I also identified key areas for improvement. Patience and adaptability were crucial as many children were eager to participate at once, making it challenging to maintain focus and efficiency. I initially struggled with balancing quality and speed, as some children wanted intricate designs while others were restless and needed a quicker approach.
On the other hand there were some students who at first hesitated whether they wanted to experience face-painting or not as it was not a common activity amongst them so. Over time, I learned to adjust my technique, interact efficiently, and ensure every child received equal attention.
LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience
My task became challenging especially as the event became more crowded. Switching between seating and standing continuously, working on multiple designs which the child chose, and ensuring that each child felt special was physically and mentally demanding. There were moments where exhaustion set in, but seeing the genuine excitement and joy on their faces kept me going. Additionally, handling unexpected situations, such as children smudging their designs or requesting complex patterns, required quick problem-solving and patience. Despite these challenges, I remained committed to ensuring every child had a memorable experience, which strengthened my ability to stay focused and persistent in high-energy environments.
LO7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Interacting with students from underprivileged backgrounds made me more aware of the ethical responsibility of such engagements. Many children were unfamiliar with the activity and were unsure about what designs to request or whether they could participate at all, leading to a rush and confusion. Some children hesitated while others tried to get multiple turns, which made it necessary to ensure fairness and equal opportunities. I had to gently guide them in making choices while ensuring no one was left out. Additionally, I was mindful of the designs I created, ensuring they were appropriate, culturally sensitive, and aligned with what the children wanted. This experience reinforced the importance of kindness, respect, and inclusivity, reminding me that small gestures can make a big difference in making children feel seen and appreciated.
Bal Mela was a truly an amazing experience, allowing me to blend creativity with meaningful engagement. It helped me refine my interpersonal skills, develop patience and perseverance, and understand the ethical considerations of working with children from different backgrounds. Most importantly, it reinforced the power of small actions in spreading joy and creating lasting memories.
