The IB Diploma requires CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), and the component that was focused on here was service, as the NGO is dedicated to giving back to the community. The HOH NGO focuses on government schools, allowing us to meet children and spread happiness throughout the community.
LO1: Identifying own strengths and developing areas for personal growth
In the HOH NGO, I was able to identify both my strengths and weaknesses, which really helped me grow. Finding out my strengths showed me what I was good at, and gave me the confidence to do those things more effectively. For example, communicating with people is one of my strong suits, which helped me meet and talk to more children. I also realized that kindness is one of my strengths, and that played a big role in making the kids feel safe and welcomed. On the other hand, learning about my weaknesses showed me where I needed improvement and gave me a starting point to develop new skills in those areas.
LO2: Demonstrate challenges that have been undertaken and develop new skills
Throughout this experience, I encountered many challenges, such as interacting with students who were shy or had difficulty expressing themselves. However, I undertook these challenges by being patient, understanding, and persistent. Overcoming these situations helped me develop new skills I hadn’t even considered before ,such as better emotional intelligence, empathy, and creative ways to communicate. This LO also connects back to LO1, as understanding my weaknesses helped me take on and grow from these challenges.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
I was able to show continuous perseverance and commitment during this entire service journey. I volunteered regularly and participated in every task that was given to me. Whether it was organizing activities, helping with logistics, or spending time with the kids, I was always present and dedicated. This consistency showed my strong commitment to the cause and the community we were serving.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance
Equality in education is an issue of global significance. Across the world, many people still lack access to proper education due to financial, social, or infrastructural limitations. Through this service, I aimed to be part of the movement that emphasizes the importance of education for all. This experience made me realize how crucial it is to support initiatives that promote equal educational opportunities.
The IB Learner Profile attributes I portrayed through this experience were Open-Minded and Caring. Handling different students with various backgrounds required patience, empathy, and a willingness to understand their world. Being open-minded allowed the children to feel safe and comfortable with us, even though we were strangers at first.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflected through this CAS experience were SDG 10 (Reducing Inequalities) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). Many government schools face resource shortages, leading to inequality and reduced quality of education. Through our efforts, we aimed to bridge this gap in small but meaningful ways.
